The most spectacular new feature of WordPress 5.0
is undoubtedly the Gutenberg editor and the associated block system. One of its advantages is that it ensures better and easier indexability for search engines. Creating and displaying content is also much more practical for the user. Despite all the advantages, many webmasters are apparently not yet ready for this extensive update. Many people ask themselves whether they are sufficiently equipped for these crucial modifications. Especially for plugin and WordPress theme developers, there are numerous things to consider in order to ensure that all features function correctly.
The time has come since 27.11.2018.
The long-awaited WordPress version 5.0 is on the market. Experts are talking about a new era for the popular content management system. We are particularly looking forward to the announced Gutenberg editor, which will give WordPress 5.0 a new look and an improved user experience in the backend. You can find out everything about the new version in the next article.
Deactivation of Gutenberg in WordPress 5.0 version
It is quite time-consuming to suddenly convert all established work processes to the new update. There are various ways to deactivate Gutenberg and work without these functions.
Installation of the official plugin
One very simple option, for example, is to install the Classic Editor plugin. This comes from the WordPress Constributor. This plugin offers the user two options:
- The Gutenberg Editor is deactivated by default, which means that the user does not come into contact with the new block system at all.
- The plugin adds additional links to the old editor in WordPress. This enables the user to decide for themselves how the article is created and edited. He can slowly but surely familiarize himself with the new CMS version.
One line of code in the functions.php
Simply insert a line of code into functions.php in the theme directory. This deactivates the Gutenberg Editor and ensures that nothing changes initially and that the user works in the familiar environment. This variant is ideal for expert users, such as page developers.
Gutenberg at WordPress Themes
It may be good news for some users that all themes that are not yet set to the new Gutenberg Editor will continue to work without any problems. However, the blog editor cannot perform its actual task in this case. This already starts in the backend: A completely correct preview of the subsequent posting normally appears here. Such a preview shows, for example, the text or background color of the created blog post. If the themes are not yet set for this function, it cannot be used to its full extent. The reason for this is that the corresponding theme for the backend must be equipped with special styles in the CSS. Finally, the Gutenberg blogs must also be adapted to the theme design.
